What it means
Paul writes this in the middle of a sustained argument against sexual immorality in the loose moral climate of Corinth (1 Corinthians 6:12-20), not as a verse about food, fitness, or substances. He has just warned that the one who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her, then reminds the Corinthians that their physical bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. The force of the passage is that a believer's body is no longer his own private possession to use as he pleases, because the Spirit of God now dwells in it as truly as God once dwelt in the Jerusalem temple. Paul grounds this not in self-improvement but in ownership: 'you were bought with a price' (1 Corinthians 6:20), the price being the blood of Christ. Holiness of body therefore flows from redemption, and the command is to glorify God with the body He purchased.
How it points to Jesus
Because Christ bought us with His own blood at the cross, our bodies belong to Him and are made temples of His Spirit, so we honor Him with how we live in them (1 Corinthians 6:20).
