Addiction

What it means

Addiction is bondage: a substance or behavior that first promised relief or pleasure becomes a master that enslaves the will, so that a person does the very thing he hates and cannot stop. Scripture names this dynamic plainly when Jesus says, 'everyone who sins is a slave to sin' (John 8:34), and Paul confesses the same anguish of being unable to do the good he wants (Romans 7:15-24). Yet the same passages that diagnose the bondage also hold out the rescue, for the Son who sets free makes a person free indeed (John 8:36), and 'where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom' (2 Corinthians 3:17). The Gospel does not merely shame the addict or demand willpower; it offers a new heart, a new Master, and the indwelling Spirit who breaks chains no resolution can break. Real freedom is not perfect ease but a restored allegiance, where Christ becomes the deeper satisfaction the addiction counterfeited.
