The Blood of Christ

What it means

The blood of Christ refers to His life poured out in death as the appointed price of our redemption, for the Scriptures teach that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness (Hebrews 9:22). From the lamb slain at Passover (Exodus 12:13) to the blood sprinkled to seal the covenant at Sinai (Exodus 24:8), God taught His people that sin is covered only by a substitute's life given in their place. At the Last Supper Jesus took the cup and said, 'This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins' (Matthew 26:28), declaring Himself the true sacrifice who establishes the promised new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34). His is no perishable atonement but precious blood, like that of a lamb without blemish (1 Peter 1:18-19), and by it we are justified, brought near, and cleansed from all sin (Romans 5:9; Ephesians 2:13; 1 John 1:7). Unlike the blood of bulls and goats, which could never take away sins, Christ's blood secures an eternal redemption once for all (Hebrews 9:12, 10:4).
