Grief

What it means

Grief is the deep sorrow that follows loss — the death of someone loved, the ruin of a hope, the ache of separation. Scripture never treats grief as weakness or a failure of faith; it gives sorrow its own language in the laments of the Psalms, the weeping of Job, and the whole book of Lamentations, and it honors mourning as a fitting response to a world fractured by sin and death. Jesus Himself wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus, so the believer knows that God does not stand aloof from our tears. Yet those who are in Christ do not grieve as people who have no hope: the God who keeps every tear in His bottle is near to the brokenhearted, and He has promised a day when He will wipe away every tear and death itself will be no more.
