What it means

Guilt is the real and rightful condition of having sinned against a holy God, together with the conscience that accuses us of it. Scripture takes guilt seriously: it is not merely a feeling to be managed but a true verdict, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). David knew its crushing weight, describing his bones wasting away under the heavy hand of God until he confessed his sin and found forgiveness (Psalm 32:3-5). The Gospel does not minimize guilt or tell the conscience to silence itself; it answers guilt with an objective remedy, the blood of Christ, which purifies our conscience from dead works to serve the living God (Hebrews 9:14). What no self-justification or good intention can accomplish, God has done by sending His Son as the propitiation for our sins.
