Lust

What it means

Lust is desire turned inward and disordered, taking what God made good and using another person as an object for the self, dishonoring both the neighbor and the Creator's design for the body. Jesus locates it not merely in the act but in the heart, warning that to look with lustful intent is already adultery within (Matthew 5:27-28), so no one can claim innocence on outward conduct alone. Scripture is honest that the eyes and the flesh war against the soul (1 John 2:16; James 1:14-15), yet it does not leave the struggler in despair. The blood of Christ cleanses even sexual sin, as Paul tells the Corinthians that such were some of you, 'but you were washed' (1 Corinthians 6:11), and the same Spirit who indwells the believer produces self-control as His fruit (Galatians 5:22-23). Purity is therefore not white-knuckled suppression but a renewed heart that learns to treasure Christ above the counterfeit.
