Isn't faith just believing without any evidence?

What it means

Many assume faith means believing things without reason, or even against the evidence, but that is not how the Bible speaks of it. In John 20:27 the risen Jesus seeks out doubting Thomas, who had refused to believe without seeing, and invites him to put his finger in the nail marks and his hand into His side: 'Stop doubting and believe.' Jesus does not rebuke Thomas for wanting evidence; He provides it, and Thomas responds with the great confession, 'My Lord and my God!' Biblical faith is trust grounded in what God has actually done and shown, especially the bodily resurrection of Jesus, which was witnessed by many and to which the apostles testified at the cost of their lives (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). Luke wrote his account so that Theophilus might know 'the certainty' of these things (Luke 1:4), and Peter insisted they 'did not follow cleverly devised myths' (2 Peter 1:16). Faith is not a leap into the dark but a reasoned trust in a God who has made Himself known.
