Wasn't Jesus just a good moral teacher, not God?

It is common to praise Jesus as a wise moral teacher while denying that He claimed to be God, but His own words make that middle position untenable. In John 8:58 He says, 'Before Abraham was born, I am,' deliberately taking the divine name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14), and His hearers immediately picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy because they understood exactly what He meant. He received worship (John 20:28; Matthew 14:33), forgave sins as only God can (Mark 2:5-7), and accepted Thomas calling Him 'my Lord and my God.' As many have observed, a man who said such things while teaching otherwise sound morality is not merely a good teacher; either His claims are false and He is a deceiver or deluded, or they are true and He is the Lord. Scripture leaves no room to file Him away as a harmless sage.
