Revelation 3:20 — Not Only an Evangelism Verse

What it means

These words of the risen Christ are addressed not to unbelievers but to the lukewarm church of Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22), a complacent congregation that thought itself rich and in need of nothing while Christ saw it as wretched, poor, blind, and naked. Astonishingly, the Lord of the church pictures Himself standing outside His own people's door, knocking, asking to be let back into fellowship. The invitation to 'come in and dine' is covenant intimacy, the shared table of restored communion, offered to those He loves enough to rebuke and discipline (Revelation 3:19). While the verse rightly pictures Christ's gracious initiative toward any heart, its first and sharpest aim is a summons to self-satisfied believers to repent of their lukewarmness and renew their walk with Him. To 'open the door' is to answer His voice with repentance, not merely a one-time decision.
