Sin

What it means

Sin is humanity's rebellion against God, expressed in thought, word, and deed, and it is both the breaking of His law and the failure to love Him with our whole heart (1 John 3:4, Matthew 22:37-38). Scripture teaches that sin entered the world through one man, Adam, and through him death spread to all, so that by nature we are not merely flawed but spiritually dead and alienated from God (Romans 5:12, Ephesians 2:1-3). It is not only the wrong things we do but a corruption of the heart from which evil flows, leaving none righteous, no, not one (Romans 3:10-12, Mark 7:21-23). The wages of sin is death, and its deepest tragedy is that it separates us from the holy God for whom we were made (Romans 6:23, Isaiah 59:2). Yet the seriousness of sin is precisely what makes the cross necessary and the grace of God amazing.
