The Gospel
What it means
The Gospel, literally good news, is the announcement of what God has done in Jesus Christ to save sinners, not advice about what we must do to save ourselves. Paul summarizes it as the message that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and rose again on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Its backdrop is the bad news that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and stand under His just wrath (Romans 3:23). In the Gospel God offers His own righteousness as a gift, received by grace through faith apart from works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 1:16-17). The fitting response is to repent and believe, turning from sin to trust in Christ as crucified, risen Lord and Savior.
How it points to Jesus
The Gospel is the announcement of who Christ is and what He has done in His death and resurrection to reconcile sinners to God, freely received through repentance and faith.
